Founded in 1995 by Tom Fulp, Newgrounds started as a Neo Geo fanzine and evolved into a major hub for Flash games and animations. It was one of the first websites to offer real-time publishing for games and movies, and it expanded to include an Audio Portal and Art Portal.

Newgrounds has been influential in the careers of many game developers and animators. In 2010, Time ranked it No. 39 on its list of '50 Best Websites'.
