It was founded in the early 1970s by Richard Hayne in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, initially named 'Free People', later rebranded to Urban Outfitters.

Free People re-emerged as a wholesale line in 1984. The brand sells women's clothing, accessories, shoes, intimates, swimwear, beauty, and wellness products.
